Abstract:Terahertz waves refer to electromagnetic waves with frequencies ranging from 0.1 to 10 THz. These waves possess the unique properties of non-ionization, non-invasiveness, high resolution and molecular characteristic fingerprint spectrum recognition, etc. This paper provides an overview of the fundamental principles of terahertz technology and lists its applications in the biomedical field. At the same time, it summarizes for advancements in terahertz-based technique in the diagnosis of otolaryngology head and neck surgical diseases. The paper mainly discusses the advantages of terahertz in pathogen identification, otitis media detection, early diagnosis of tumors and assessment of lymph node metastasis. On this basis, on these findings, we examine its implementations in otolaryngology along with potential factors influencing diagnostic accuracy in this field. Future prospects for terahertz technology in otolaryngology are discussed as well.
