Abstract:Objective To investigate the expression and clinical significance of metastasis associated protein 2 (MTA2) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC). Methods A total of 96 paraffin-embedded tissue specimens of NPC with complete clinical data were selected. Anti-MTA2 antibody of rabbit anti-human recombinant type, MaxVisionTM ready-to-use rapid immunohistochemical kit and polymer technology were used to detect the expression of MTA2 in NPC tissues. The relationship between the expression of MTA2 and the clinicopathological parameters of NPC was statistically analyzed. Results The positive expression of MTA2 was mainly concentrated in the nuclei of cancer cells. There was also a small amount of positive expression in the surrounding stroma between cancer nests and in vascular endothelial cells. In the NPC patients with distant metastasis, the median total score, 25th percentile, and 75th percentile of MTA2 in the cancer tissues were all higher than those in the NPC patients without distant metastasis. For the NPC patients who survived less than 5 years, the median total score, 25th percentile, and 75th percentile of MTA2 in the cancer tissues were all higher than those of the patients who survived for 5 years or more. The differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The levels of MTA2 were not related to the general condition of patients, such as age at onset, gender, and smoking status (P>0.05), nor were they related to the T stage, N stage, or clinical stage of the tumors (P>0.05). Conclusions MTA2 may play a role in promoting the occurrence and development of NPC. A thorough exploration of the expression of MTA2 has certain clinical significance for the prognosis and survival of NPC patients.
