Abstract:The eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx. Its main function is to maintain the balance of air pressure between the middle ear and the nasopharynx. It mainly promotes the discharge of secretions in the middle ear, and plays a role in blocking and eliminating sound. Eustachian tube dysfunction can lead to symptoms of aural fullness, tinnitus, hearing loss, and even middle ear diseases such as secretory otitis media and cholesteatoma. However, there is still a lack of a gold standard for examination and treatment of Eustachian tube dysfunction at present. Balloon eustachian tuboplasty (BET) has been available since 2010. Many studies have confirmed its effectiveness and safety. The paper reviews the origin, principle, indications, surgical procedure, clinical application and complications of BET. It is aimed at providing a clinical practice reference.
