Abstract:Solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11) is an amino acid transport protein responsible for extracellular cystine uptake and the cystine/glutamate exchanger. Cystine is reduced to cysteine, a rate-limiting substrate in glutathione synthesis, which is involved in the process of protecting cells from oxidative stress. SLC7A11 plays an important role in cell growth, reproduction, and metabolic renewal. SLC7A11 is expressed in a variety of human tissues and has been found to be upregulated in many types of cancer cells. SLC7A11 expression plays a key role in tumor prognosis and the mechanisms of drug-resistance,which is therefore considered as a potential therapeutic target. In this review, we will explore the structure, function, and regulatory factors of SLC7A11 expression and activity. We will have a particular focus on its role in the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and whether it can be used as a biomarker to assess prognosis.
