Abstract:Objective To observe the clinical manifestations and characteristics of complicated pharyngalgia in patients infected with Omicron variant strain of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2).Methods Clinical data of 142 patients infected with omicron variant strain were collected from April 18, 2022 to May 30, 2022 in the ward of the designated hospital of Shuguang Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The clinical characteristics were analyzed according to the grading score, occurrence time and duration of pharyngalgia, the psychological status caused by pharyngalgia, as well as the duration of pharyngeal discomfort after the disappearance of pharyngalgia. Results Among the 142 patients, 111 cases (78.2%) were mild, 27 (19.0%) were common, and 4 (2.8%) were severe. There were no significant differences in the occurrence time and grade of pharyngalgia among all groups (P>0.05). The duration of pharyngalgia and the duration of pharyngeal discomfort after the disappearance of pharyngalgia in the severe group were significantly longer than those in the mild group and the common group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The duration of pharyngalgia in the common group was the shortest, and there was significant difference compared with the mild group (P<0.05). The psychological status caused by pharyngalgia of the mild group was worse than those of the other two groups, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusions Pharyngalgia is obvious in patients infected with Omicron variant strain of SARS-COV-2, and affects their quality of life, nutritional diet and disease rehabilitation. Clinicians should not ignore the treatment and relief of pharyngalgia in these patients.
