Abstract:Objective To summarize the diagnostic and therapeutic experience of a case about nasopharynx and skull base infection caused by Eikenella corrodens, and to improve the understanding of this bacterial infection. Methods The case data of a patient with nasopharynx and skull base infection caused by Eikenella corrodens suspected of nasopharyngeal carcinoma were retrospectively analyzed and discussed in combination with the literature. Results The patient underwent endoscopic examination, imaging examination and laboratory examination were completed in this case. Two pathological reports of nasopharyngeal skull base tissue were chronic granulomatous inflammation. The patient was confirmed to be infected with the infection of Eikenella corrodens by laboratory. The patient was cured after 2 months of debridement and drainage and oral antibiotics, and there was no recurrence after 3 months of follow-up.Conclusions Nasopharynx and skull base infection is rare in clinic. The clinical symptoms and imaging findings of this infection are similar to those of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The incidence rate of Eikenella corrodens is very low. In the diagnosis and treatment of this infection, it is necessary to make a definite diagnosis combined with pathological and etiological examination. The debridement and drainage and appropriate anti-infective drugs should be selected as soon as possible.
